Near Earth Supernova - How The Supernova, Dangerous Universe Event Can Harm Our Earth

A supernova is a situation when the star reaches the end of its life and it explodes in such a way it releases more energy that it ever released during its entire life. The event sometimes seem to be dangerous to earth if supernova is a near earth supernova which is an explosion resulting from the death of star that occur close enough to the earth.

Supernova releases large amount of gamma rays, a very strong electromagnetic explosion which can last for milliseconds or even an hour. The lethal X rays and gamma rays would be the first causes of death on Earth and the entire life of human would disappear in few generations.

How Supernova Can Harm Earth
If the supernova would happen on Earth and occurred  50 light years away the electromagnetic radiation from the dead star would reach earth atmosphere and in turn a large part of ozone layer would have been destroyed. When the supernova occurs, it release gamma rays which induces atmosphere elements in chemical reaction which converts nitrogen into nitrogen oxides, nitrogen oxides will be responsible for depleting ozone layer.

Ozone layer protects earth from ultra-violet radiation. The first blast of ultraviolet radiation from the supernova would destroy Earth’s ozone layer within a matter of days, transforming the ozone primarily into atomic oxygen.

Living Things On Earth Would be In Danger

The lethal X rays and gamma rays would be the first causes of death on Earth. Within days, organisms from virtually all species of plants and animals would begin dying of radiation poisoning. Entire radiation sensitive species might then be annihilated. The radiation would also cause many cancers and other internal diseases over succeeding years, leading to many more plant and animal deaths. At the same time, ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth’s surface would cause an astronomical

jump in the rates of skin cancer and cataracts.
